Completed: These are felt slippers with laces! I've seen something like these before. I believe they are supposed to be worn over regular shoes. The thief must have worn these slippers to avoid footsteps when sneaking into the mansion. That's quite a feat! But it's hard to run with slippers on. No wonder he took them off.
