Last Chance
Cardsharp
Who’d have guessed that I met Count Cagliostro himself! And not just met but beat at cards! I can’t force such a powerful mage to lift the curse that keeps me from the Red Rose. The only option is to ask nicely - I have to return to the past and meet him again. We need the remaining clock parts so they can carry me back in time. Now Martha has refused to help I have no idea where to find them. City Hall is our last chance.
What’s written in the note found under the stairs? Nothing, there are simple numerals arranged in a circle... What could they possibly mean? Of course, it’s a clock dial, for sure!
-
Thread of Time
Martha
I still look depleted, almost bodiless. I urgently need an elixir to restore my vital energy, but I’m too exhausted to even get up off this chair.
Glory to the magic of the City, I’m all right again! I was never so close to death, or rather, to the total disintegration of my entity, which is far more terrible. Don’t ever bring me the details of this clock again, it’s too dangerous!
-
Woman’s Whine
Martha
Can you hear me? Lean closer to the flask, I’ve almost lost my voice already! It’s all because of the watch magic! The ritual with the gears spread my body through time and only a little of my essence remains here. I’ll soon disappear completely! Quick, bring the Collector’s watch chain; only its linking power will help me recover my body.
Let’s take the chain to Martha quickly. I fear that we risk not finding our squeaky old lady in the Room of Fate.
-
She’s disappeared!
Cardsharp
What happened in Martha’s old room while we were outside?! Did you notice that: flashes, a rumble, ominous shadows outside the window... And a scream! Martha is gone! Look, there’s nobody in the room. We need to find the medium or, I’m afraid, we’ll never assemble the Collector’s watch without her. Find a lucky horseshoe. We could really use some luck now.
A horseshoe is here but Martha still isn’t! Wait, do you hear that tiny voice, like mice squeaking? Where is it coming from? It’s coming from the table but I don’t see anyone there. Unbelievable! Look at that! Martha is in the flask with the gears from the magical clock! That’s what you get for dealing with magic! Looks like Martha is yelling something but I can barely hear her...
-
Werewolf’s Blood
Martha
I’ve put the gears in a special flask; now they won’t be dragged into the past or the future. Now, what were we talking about? Ah yes, you wanted to learn about the stranger who arrived in the City on February 30th. He should’ve left his mark on the City’s aura and I’ll need a special elixir to help you.
This will be enough. You’d better leave while I conduct the ritual, it’s too dangerous for the uninitiated.
-
Streams of Time
Martha
To enter the temporal pool that holds the gears, I’ll need all my power. I can only hold the time tunnel open for a few minutes. Hurry up with your search.
There are the gears! They’re strange, as if spread in time. I seem to both see and not see them. Let’s take them to Martha before they disappear again into the ocean of time.
-
Memory Diary
Conductor
You’re looking for the person who caused the closing of Red Rose and arrived at the City on February 30th? I don’t remember, although... If he was a peculiar man, I might have noted him in my ticket list. Sometimes I jot down my impressions of the City’s guests. Find it and I’ll try to help you.
Well, let’s see... I love rereading my ticket list, sometimes it mentions amazing twists of destiny. Unfortunately, there’s nothing on the man from February 30th. If he was a magician strong enough to seal the doors of the Red Rose, he might have arrived by his own means, not through the Station. Ask Martha, this case clearly involves magic.
-
The Cogwheels of Time
Cardsharp
Let’s try to find the gears from the Collector’s miraculous watch. I don’t know their magical ability but the Medium once called them the “gears of time”. Maybe hands on the clock will point us to the place where we should look. Look, clock hands are persistently pointing at my hat. What’s this? A piece of paper. But the letters are so small I can’t make anything out. An ordinary magnifier will not be enough, we need a microscope here.
Let’s see... It’s only a part of the word “Cond...” Got it - Conductor! Most of the people who wound up in the City go through him. Maybe he’ll remember the person who closed the café for me. Since this stranger arrived at the City on February 30th - a really strange date, the Conductor might remember it.
-
The Mystery of the Red Rose.
Cardsharp
I once gambled with a strange person, and he figured out my... methods. Furious, he magically locked Café’s doors and vanished. Help Cardsharp come back to that fateful day with the Collector’s clock and fix everything. Let’s search for the clock hands first.
These clock hands are so elegant. I heard they point to the item a person currently needs the most. The hands are pointing to... my cylinder? But I have it already. Hmm, maybe they’re pointing to the most important nearby item? Then they’re right!
-
Unusual date
Cardsharp
I need the Collector’s watch even more now. It’s an old story related to Red Rose shutting down. It’s been so long ago that I don’t even remember the exact date. You can find it in the newspaper clipping with the article about the closing of the café. But it lies on a bar counter and nobody, except you, can enter the café. Can you look up the date?
February 30th? There are only 28 days in February! Mind you, in this City we shouldn’t be surprised. At least we got our first clue.
-
Diamond necklace
Juliette
What a beautiful piece of jewelry! For the cost of this necklace I could live in comfort for several years. But only in the regular world, since such things lose their value in the City.
-
A Commission
Juliette
A terrifying werewolf has been wandering around the Manor House Gate, recently. My Mistress often sends me on commissions to that part of the City, but I daren’t pass by the monster. I won’t be able to overcome it if it attacks me. Can you drive it away?
-
A Friendly Ghost
Juliette
My Mistress ordered me to get a scroll with a skull-shaped seal from City Hall. I don’t have any right to ask why she needs such a macabre item - my job is to carry out her orders. The thing is, the scroll is enchanted and can’t be seen in daylight. I couldn’t possibly enter City Hall at night, but I don’t have time to explain why. My Mistress needs the scroll urgently. Will you help me?
Thank you, you’ve really helped me out. If you’re curious, I’ll tell you why I’m scared to enter City Hall at night. Occasionally, especially in the dark, I feel like a ghost is following me. Sometimes he comes up behind me, very close, and puts his cold, little fingers in my hand...
-
Some paper! Quick!
Cardsharp
I have a very useful habit: I write descriptions of all my successful inventions. I’ve filled so many notebooks I could probably found my own library. Unfortunately, we’re short on paper in the City. To get a notepad, for example, you need to bend over backwards, since they’re guarded by hordes of evil spirits. But I heard you’ve got nothing to fear from them. Maybe you could grab a couple of notepads next time you run into them?
Thank you. You’ve helped me out yet again. Before I die, I’ll definitely make sure you get my invention library in my will. You’re the best candidate for my successor.
-
Irish Coffee
Martha
You don’t look so hot... You need a pick-me-up - a good cup of coffee with a splash of cognac. But making such a drink is not easy. To get coffee, you have to defeat a gargoyle. Cognac, on the other hand, can be found in the Café.
Let’s have coffee, then I’ll tell your fortune by reading the grounds. I don’t normally tell the future like that, but with the way things are I want to leave no stone unturned. So, hold the cup in your left hand and turn clockwise three times. Let’s see... a dagger. That means your enemies conspire against you. The coffee was delicious, but we failed to learn anything new.
-
Destiny’s Reward
Martha
Would you like me to tell your fortune? Keep your filthy lucre. The cards know all. Here are your three cards: Fate, Obstacle, and Wild Beast. Do you understand? No? It’s easy: defeat a wild beast, and destiny will reward you. Werewolves come to our City from time to time. Defeat one and be rewarded.
Nicely done! Here, take my alchemical flask, it’ll help develop your talents much more quickly. I feel like we’re running out of time. I still can’t tell what’s going to happen and when: all I have are guesses and intuitions...
-
Monster Mash
Martha
I promised the Conductor I’d drive away a werewolf that’s been wandering around the area, but I can’t abandon my work at the moment. I’m on the verge of a break through regarding an ancient spell. If I get distracted now, I’ll have to start all over again later. Please can you take care of those monsters for me.
Wow, well done! I couldn’t have done better myself. These dangerous, evil monsters have become more active since you came to the City... I used to think it was a temporary phenomenon, but it’s showing no signs of letting up. You seem to attract monsters like a magnet.
-
A Spell of Invisibility
Martha
Thanks for your help. The City really lucked out when it took you. I’m sorry you were captured by the fog like the rest of us, but who knows what’ll happen next? A frightening beginning can often be a sign of a happy ending.
-
Care for a Cup of Joe?
Detective
I can hardly remember the last time I slept at night. For whatever reason, I always think more clearly after midnight. Today, as luck would have it, I’ve run out of my favorite Brazilian coffee. Whenever you try to find some good coffee in the City, you always run into gargoyles. The first time I barely escaped in one piece... If you manage to make it past them, do you think you could bring me a bag of coffee?
Coffee - my favorite Brazilian blend! It’s a gift fit for a king! Thank you, now I’ll be able to sit up until dawn without batting an eye.
-
The Mysterious Letter
Detective
A girl was found dead in a deserted drugstore. Horrible sight. While Cardsharp was getting me, the sealed letter in the girl’s hand disappeared. It may be the main clue! Martha’s found out where it is now. Could you help me find this letter?
Here it is, the mysterious letter. “I remember being carried by hooded people. I woke up in a deserted drugstore feeling terribly weak. I found a sheet of paper and a pencil. I’m writing it in the hope of being saved...” But nobody saved her...
-
Mmm, Croissant!
Valerie
Today I dreamed I was eating a croissant with almond cream. It’s my favorite! When I woke up, I could still taste it on my tongue... the flaky, delicate dough; the light, fragrant cream... I’d give anything for a croissant!
A fresh croissant - I can’t believe my luck! I’m so glad I met you! If it wasn’t for you, my life in the City would be gloomy and sad.
-
A Little Lipstick
Valerie
I’ve been in a terrible mood for three days now... can’t you see why? Just look at me: my lips are whiter than white. I’ve run out of my favorite scarlet lipstick. The medium gave me a hint about where to find some more, but creepy things are happening there! It’s almost like the Dark Ones are keeping the good make-up for themselves! What, you think it’s funny? You try and get some, then we’ll see who’s laughing.
You keep surprising me! I’m starting to think there’s nothing you can’t do. I can’t express my gratitude in words. You’ve almost... saved my life, do you understand?
-
You’re on the Air
Valerie
For me? Why? Although... wait, let me guess: it was Valerie’s idea. What a girl! She really thinks I need her help. That kind of concern for others is an alien phenomenon here, a holdover from our past lives. I don’t need a walkie-talkie, I have my own means of communication. You hang on to it, but don’t say anything to Valerie; let the girl be happy in the thought that she made the Conductor’s day.
-
Dual Nature
Valerie
What bad luck! Every time I visit City Hall there’s a werewolf hanging around the entrance. Clanking his chains, gnashing his teeth, whipping his tail around... I wonder why they want to invade the City?
So that is why they’re searching the City! This Lycanthropy flower, the symbol of their transformation, must be carried at all times to help identify their kin.
-
The Pilot’s Jacket
Alex
I dreamed about shaking hands with a pilot who smiled at me and left. His jacket suddenly fell without the pilot noticing - and then I woke up. Maybe it’s connected to the recent plane crash? Help me deal with the evil spirits guarding this mystery.
This jacket looks so familiar... My best friend Steve used to wear it! We played guitar together, but he always dreamed of becoming a pilot. He even got a flight jacket so the girls would take him for one. Sometimes he even believed it himself...
-
GHOSTLY LOVE
Martha
Rob and Ellie were separated by the curse of a cruel sorcerer and never met in life. We have to help them. Please bring me some artifacts. I’ll put the poor bride’s belongings into a chest and enchant it to finally set her soul free.
Did you see? Two sparks rose into the air and flew away to the stars. These were the souls of Ellie and Robert. It seems they managed to find each other, albeit on the other side... Thanks to you, we reunited two lost souls. Now no one will tear them apart.
-
LIVING FLOWERS
Detective
I’m starting to get a picture of what happened. The Baron’s bride, Ellie, was in love with Rob, a simple lumberjack. The Baron found out about their feelings and even invited the poor man to the wedding to humiliate him. By the way, buddy, that bouquet seems odd. Pass it to me, please.
Yeah, this bouquet definitely looks strange. There is blood on the petals... And the werewolf is looking at it with caution, don’t you think? As if he knows something, or is afraid of it. Look how his fur is raised.
-
HIDING PLACE
Martha
How did we fail to notice a werewolf tailing us? Looks like the story of the ghostly bride contains a lot more mysteries. The werewolf led us into his lair. He’s clearly pointing at something in the darkness. Something white, it seems... A dress?
This is a wedding dress... It’s simple, but very elegant and delicate. Although it looks nothing like a dress the Baron’s bride would wear. And look at the werewolf. He looks sick and in pain, but he’s still reaching for the dress...
-
AMBUSH
Detective
We need to find out who is the special guest the ghostly bride is trying to tell us about. Martha, you said the poor thing wanted to show us something? Let’s try to follow her. What if she leads us to a clue?
I can’t believe this invitation has been here for almost a hundred years! I can even make out some words, "We invite you, Robert, to our wedding. Ellie and..." Great! Now we know the names of the bride and the guest!
-
BRIDE’S RING
Martha
The ghost of the bride who went missing in her wedding is asking for help... She must have escaped. I think we can help her if we find her wedding ring. Her spirit whispers that it was cold and unpleasant to the touch...
You’ve found the ring! Now I’m certain that we’re on the right track.\n Wait, the bride’s spirit is calling out to me again. The otherworldly noise makes it hard to make out her whisper... I think she’s saying something about a "special guest" and is trying to point something out...
-
SHADOWS AND SOUNDS
Detective
The ghostly bride remembers running through a gloomy place. I suggest we compare the map of the old City with the current buildings and walk along the old routes. Who knows, maybe we’ll find the shoe?
Looks like we got lucky. That’s the bride’s shoe. It’s old, but still beautiful. If Juliette were here, she would know when such shoes were in fashion, and we’d... Wait a minute. I’ve already seen a shoe like this!
-
Reliable Cache
Collector
The Proton Trap is a deadly, anti-anomaly weapon, Class 7-A. Store shielded to avoid radiation poisoning. Hmm... A working model can be found in the city vault, safely tucked behind the third plate in Room 6. Beware of ghosts. Hmm... Burn after use...
Damn, what a mess! It’s good we found the Trap... I’d keep it if I could, but the Collector demanded we burn it after use. Come on, let’s rescue the girl!
-
Painful Memories
Alex
You’re right; ghosts help me remember things, even though it’s painful. I’m ready to meet them, but come with me, please. I’m afraid that if I face them, death will seem a better option.
-
Martha knows all
Martha
Hello, Alex. Yes, I know your name, but nothing else. Oh, most people don’t see you? That’s possible. Listen, Alex, I can’t find Julia, but... Will you please stay in the Room of Fate for a while? My crystal ball will show me everything later.
Alex, I’m so sorry! I’ve nothing to tell you until I’m certain, but you won’t remember anything if you keep shunning ghosts. You must face your fears, Alex.
-
Distract the Conductor
Conductor
Hey, friend, are you talking to someone? Maybe you’re seeing things, huh? I was looking for you to make sure you’re... okay. They say you often talk to yourself. Would you like to come to the Station with me?
Sleeping like a baby... thanks for distracting him, the Conductor is a regular boozer. But this note... I can hardly believe it, but the werewolf attack leaves no room for doubt. He’s dangerous to me. Maybe to you, too, since you’re helping me.
-
Madman Fugitive
Alex
You want to know how I escaped? I wish I knew - my memory fails me. I see white spots in my past; Julia’s voice, my dad’s face... They are far away, hidden by a dense fog. Let’s return to the crash site; maybe I’ll find clues that will help me understand how I escaped... And from where.
There are no traces here. To be honest, I’d rather find Julia’s trail to discover what befell her but it seems I was in the car alone. I don’t understand... Okay, I give up. Has anyone in this freaking City seen anything?
-
Ghosts of the Past
Alex
Do you see that? There’s a ghost at the end of the street. It’s floating above the ground and coming toward us! Help me - I don’t want to lose my memory again!
Are the ghosts gone? I feel so helpless when I see those hellish creatures... Thank you. I couldn’t cope with them single-handedly. Is it all the Conductor’s doing? God, what will I do?
-
Familiar Gate
Alex
I think I’ve been here before... This the Manor, right? I’ve a strange feeling that something important happened here but I’m a newcomer and I shouldn’t have such feelings. Let’s look for some evidence. I keep thinking about Julia - have you seen any of her belongings at the accident site? No? Too bad...
This is the other part of my driving license. It bears claw marks and the cover looks like it was torn with teeth. There are drops of dried blood - is it mine? Ah, now I remember... a pack of werewolves dragged me somewhere then left me alone. I saw creatures made of mist - ghosts, perhaps - then a dark, cold place. I saw the outline of a terrible device... Just thinking about it, my hair stands on end. Something terrible happened, but what exactly?
-
Attack
Alex
I think I was a musician. My girlfriend Julia and I were in love. But my father, a rich banker and criminal, wanted me to be like him. But I started a band, wanted to play my music, so Julia and I decided to run away. Then... What are these monsters?
Why did those creatures attack as soon as we left the Station? It didn’t feel like a random encounter. Werewolves... I’ve come across them only in books. Someone sicced them on us after we talked with the Conductor.
-
Empty Station
Alex
It’s very kind of you to see me here – I always get lost in unfamiliar cities. The Conductor is not at the Station, could you wait with me? I’d like to look around in case something awakens my memories. When you remember nearly nothing about yourself, it’s weird...
I found a broken guitar between the railroad ties. Something’s scratched on the fingerboard: “Alex”. It reminds me of... it’s mine! Perhaps I’m a musician? Then where did I get the money for an expensive car? Someone’s coming... Is that the Conductor? I don’t remember him. Please talk to him.
-
Amnesia
Alex
I’m so glad you’re here! I started to think I was invisible – people passed by paid no attention to my call. Where am I? I came round next to my broken car... I hit the statue and lost consciousness. I don’t remember anything else... What’s this city? And my name?!
Money... guns... I don’t remember anything; it’s not mine after all! You found a torn driving license issued in the name of Alex... I vaguely remember the name and the picture resembles me. Let’s assume I’m Alex. Hold on... There’s a note in the license. “Don’t trust the Conductor.” Who’s he? I think I should meet the author of this note.
-
Strange Sounds
Juliette
Hi, there! Will you talk with me? I’m a bit scared... This morning, on an errand for the Mistress, I heard rumbling and clanking in the east of the square, like twisting metal. Something bad was happening, but I was in a hurry and my Mistress is very strict. If I disobey, I get in trouble. Then, when coming back, I saw a werewolf. They say you are great at dealing with werewolves. Drive them away and find out what’s happening!
Hey! Is anyone alive? Come here, please! What’s going on? Where am I?
-
Missing Link
Detective
We need something else and I have an idea! There’s a small item that can keep any strong anomaly under control: chalk, used to draw pentagrams and protective circles!
Quick, put it into the Cataloguer’s receiver! Phew, it works! I never thought I’d be so happy to hear the projector’s chirping...
-
Pendulum
Martha
To reach the trance state I need a special pendulum. But it’s hard to find one. My last real pendulum was sent into one of the Past realms by Manor Mistress. Probably just to spite me. Find it for me.
A fine pendulum! What exquisite work from my mentor in the art of otherworldly communication from the school of young witches. Thank you for getting it back.
-
Application Instructions
Detective
I’ve never heard of a proton trap, but I trust the Collector. Where can the manual be hiding? We should look in his house. If anyone asks, say you’re helping me with the investigation. Let’s try to find out the location of this trap.
We found the manual. I think the Collector exaggerated its complexity. Here are a couple of diagrams and a description of the security measures... Apparently, the proton trap is a really powerful weapon. Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything more about the trap itself.
-
The Detective takes on the case
Detective
A Poltergeist is raging in the cafe. It’s a malicious anomaly that turns all things upside down. It’ll be hard for an ordinary man to deal with it. Please bring back the items under the Poltergeist’s influence, so we can find out how to beat it. Quickly!
Good - some of Martha’s tools, but I haven’t seen them before. A secret mechanism has triggered an opening in the wall and I can see a document.
-
The Collector’s Records
Valerie
We’re not experts on ghosts or magic, even though I know a little about love spells. The Detective once told me the Collector studied these phenomena in detail. There should be records in his house - maybe we can find some information there.
Look what I’ve found! It’d be useful if I could make out the handwriting... Remember those objects floating upside down in the cafe? Look at this: “A Poltergeist is one of the most powerful and evil spirits; wherever it appears, a real hell begins. Poltergeists can easily move objects, regardless of their weight, and can even upend a man.” This is a Poltergeist, but how do we deal with it?
-
On the Track of Gargoyles
Valerie
Something terrible is happening in the Café! No, don’t go in there, just look at what’s going on inside! Objects fly around, the counter is upside down, a cupboard hangs in the air near the ceiling... Did you hear that? Someone’s shouting! That girl must be inside and the spirits won’t let her go! What if this invasion is her fault? We’re faced with a completely new anomaly! Let’s ask Martha for advice. Do we still have enough time left?
Martha’s nowhere around. A note on the table reads: “Meditating in the astral realms. Interrupt only if the end of days imminent.” Oh, no! She can’t help us.
-
Statue of Mercy
Valerie
It speaks no more... Say I’m not dreaming. Someone said the Engineer had put a magical heart into the statue. Now it can hear when someone needs help and even alert others about it. So, someone has been locked up somewhere by gargoyles?
These stone gargoyles aren’t very talkative or at all shy. They just flew away from us and didn’t agree to help. But one of them stopped and beckoned us to follow. It led us to the Red Rose Café, grimacing and wheezing terribly. If it could talk, everything would be simpler.
-
She speaks!
Conductor
You do nothing but crank out trouble! Anomalies have escaped from the Station Building and flooded the City. Hopefully, the residents had time to take shelter. Martha says these effects are far more dangerous than previous ones. I think someone, pointing no fingers, deserves a flogging for wanting another trinket! Go to City Hall, try to find books or records on spirits, anything!
We did the rounds of City Hall and find nothing of interest. The anomalies will soon reach here, then... Oh, look, the statue under the stone veil has stirred! Now it’s muttering something! I can hear its voice. Hush, I can’t make out the words... “Help me... Does anyone hear me? I can’t get free.” Did you hear that? “I’m locked up... gargoyles... ” I don’t get it!
-
Ghosts at the Station
Conductor
What have you two done? I said it was dangerous here! Why did you approach the crashed plane? Now even I’m scared to get close to the Station. Do something about it!
Look, I’ve never seen it before... Usual methods are useless here – firecrackers make the spirits angrier. Their numbers are increasing! We are overwhelmed!
-
A New Acquisition for Valerie
Valerie
This new guy is so cute, but he wouldn’t pay attention to me. No wonder, look at me! I have nothing fancy to wear and look like a ninny! Can you help? I saw a beautiful hairpin at the Crash Site, but didn’t have time to pick it up. It’s an elegant, old item. To be honest, I’m scared to go to the Station because of those flashes and shadows in the windows. And I’m afraid of the Conductor. Please, bring me that hairpin.
Thank you, it’s so beautiful! Now this guy will notice me. Oh, what’s going on? The flashes at the Station are getting brighter... And, do you hear that noise... ?
-
Survival Kit
Detective
Your help today was truly invaluable. While you were searching for a compass I had time to patch up old scratches and disinfect Valerie’s wound. In a couple of days it’ll heal and the girl will be running around just like before. I’m ready for a new case but after the whole deal with the manticore I need a survival kit. Put one together for me.
Okay, now I have all the necessities for a new case. The key is to stay sharp and keep your eyes open. Thank you so much, buddy.
-
Correct Orientation
Detective
Quite a battle, eh! The manticore is defeated. My blood is still roaring with adrenalin! Now you see how dangerous the adventures in the City of Shadows can be. I’ll need a survival kit so I won’t be caught unaware again. But what kind of a survival kit doesn’t have a trusty compass in it? I have to wander narrow streets of the City too often. Can you bring me one?
A sturdy serviceable compass. Only one like that can help you orientate yourself in the City’s conditions. It’s a real rarity but I have no doubt you’ll somehow find it, partner.
-
Fear of Light
Detective
This manticore is really strong and, even though I now have a magically-charged machete, I simply might be too slow to deal a death blow. I have an idea: manticores are nocturnal creatures, just like werewolves, meaning they’re afraid of bright light. The light of signal flares is so bright it can blind monsters. Find me signal rockets.
Signal rockets are just what I need. With them distracting the monsters we now have a chance. Well, let’s get down to business. I’ll deal with the manticore with my magical machete and you deal with the werewolves. To battle!
-
Surrounded!
Detective
I see you have a machete in your hands. I need it right now! Can you go up to the roof, while I distract the manticore? It’s pitch-dark in City Hall, so you’d better take your flashlight.
Thanks, I couldn’t fight back without you. Last night I found some clues on the Collector’s. Went to City Hall to try and find some info on him and was attacked by the Manticore. This creature is a rare visitor - someone didn’t want me learning the Collector’s secrets.
-
Monsters around!
Valerie
While we were looking for a machete, werewolves also appeared at City Hall. Detective ruined quite a number of werewolf furs during his investigations and now the sharp-toothed monsters have decided to have their revenge while he is boxed in by the manticore. By the way, one of the werewolves holds a brush kit for getting fingerprints in his jaw, the one that Detective dropped as he escaped from the manticore. I’m sure he will be really grateful if you return it to him.
Hey, I’m here at the top! Oh, you’ve found my brush kit! Thank you, it’s the only one I have. I will thank you properly when I get out of this mess.
-
A Machete for the Detective
Valerie
Great. Now I need to find a huge machete to charge with magic and bring to Detective.
Oh my gosh, what a frightening weapon! Its blade is dark as if smeared with blood. I’m sure it’ll become even deadlier in the capable hands of our Detective!
-
Stolen Amulet
Martha
I see the Threefold Amulet in the magic mirror. One of the Mistress’s countless admirers left it for her once.\n Some suitors return without seeing her even once, others enter the Manor and never come back...\n Find the amulet, the Detective is waiting for your help.
Yes, this is the Threefold Amulet. Now you can charge a machete with battle magic. For this just slide the amulet along the blade.
-
Solid Protection
Alex
I was carrying the sabertooth claw with me to protect myself from Night Terrors. Those horrible anomalies are always waiting for me. The claw does a good job of scaring them off. Only I seem to have lost it somewhere...
Yes, that’s the sabertooth claw I was talking about. Do you see how it gleams with magical light?
-
Poor Martha
Martha
So, you need the Threefold Amulet to charge a weapon with magic and take it to the Detective, who’s hiding from a manticore on the roof of City Hall? I’ll help you. I’ll need a rejuvenating elixir and a sabertooth claw. The rejuvenating elixir can be made from orchids. Will you bring them to me? I’ll even share a few sips with you.
Excellent, the orchid potion will be ready shortly. Now I need a sabertooth claw. I lent it to Alex a couple of weeks ago and he’s not so eager to return it.
-
Amulet or life
Valerie
The Medium has the Threefold Amulet, can you go to her place? But you’d better prepare some magical present for Martha. She did mention that she was out of Truth Powder, so I think if you show up with some, she won’t be able to say no.
Detective is in trouble, you say? The Threefold Amulet exists, I worked with it once. But I was completely exhausted after the ritual. I can help you.

Damsel in distress
Valerie
Here you are, at last - I’m safe now!\n Look at this wound on my leg. I’ll explain later as it’s bleeding badly. I’m feeling dizzy...\n Do you have a bandage? No? Me neither, I’m so careless...\n Please find a first-aid kit, I won’t last long without it!
Thanks to you, I won’t die from blood loss... or fear. Now I’ll disinfect the wound and apply a bandage. Quite stylish! Valerie, who’s been in many a tight spot... Ah, let me tell you what happened...

Queen as a Gift
Martha
While you were away I discovered the Queen of Spades at the Manor House Gate. You’re saying you’ve already found several cards there? The Queen must have been well hidden.
Of course, I can imagine why so many cards were there - one of the Mistress’s admirers must have found those cards and given them to her. But she rejects most of her suitors’ gifts, so they’re often left lying at the gate. I wish I had someone to give me a gift!

Fan of beauty
Valerie
The Jack? Yes, I have such a card, why? No, I really need it, though I don’t play cards! This guy is such a handsome, curly-haired young man... I so lack male company! The Conductor is too old, the Cardsharp is too slippery and the Detective doesn’t pay me any attention. Jack is so pretty I don’t want to give it to you! Oh, all right, I’ll trade it for a music player. There’s no one to dance with, but at least I could listen to music. The player is somewhere among the wreckage.
Let me have a last look at lovely Jack. Now take it and leave before I change my mind. I already want it back, but I’ll control myself for a little while. I’d listen to my music player, but I don’t have any headphones. Maybe you can find them? Hey, where are you going?

Martha helps
Martha
The Queen and Jack of Spades from Cardsharp’s deck? Of course I’ve heard of his deck. He fusses over it like a hen with just one chick. He was very upset when he lost the cards. I can find their actual location, but I need to take a couple of sips of my special potion. You can see how exhausted I am, I can’t even get up from the chair. The last ritual used too much of my energy. Find me the potion and I’ll be able to see the truth.
These are the images that were revealed to me after I drank half of the potion. Look closely... A young girl, a small animal on her shoulder... That’s Valerie. She’s near the crash site and she has Cardsharp’s Jack of Spades.

Cards at the Gate
Cardsharp
It took me a long time to reshuffle the deck. Relations between the cards are messed up; they quarrel, make peace, then quarrel again. Yet I managed to make some sense of their hubbub. The cards believe that someone else is at the Manor House gate. You should go back there - my cards never lie. At least, not to me.
The Ten and the King? Great! Only two cards remain, then my life will regain its former happiness. Yes, I’ll keep my word; complete the task and the Joker is yours.
-
The Ace of spades
Cardsharp
The Ace is the highest card in the suit. It would never leave the lower cards unattended. Spades have an innate desire to control. The Ace shouldn’t be far from the other cards of the suit.
We have the Ace, only four cards remain. But finding them will not be an easy task!
-
Spades with us
Cardsharp
We must place the cards in a special box that will protect them from the City and the City from them. But back to the point: spades are a nocturnal suit, so you have a greater chance to find it by moonlight. We should look for it at night.
Give me those cards, quickly! My hands are shacking with excitement - I’m touching the spades for the first time in many years. Wait, the suit is incomplete. Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten are missing - the Black Straight. They’re the top spades and the whole deck. Why can’t we find them? Something’s going on, here.
-
Obedient Diamonds
Cardsharp
When I have two suits, I again feel the secret connections between the cards. When I lost the deck I lost a part of my soul... The Diamonds are in the Manor Gate area. They are very amenable.
Yes, my diamond! Let me put the cards together... Hey, guys, stop quarreling; don’t you recognize each other? You are united again, so get used to it! Don’t look like that - I’m not crazy! Don’t you hear the fuss the cards make? No? Only a professional card player can hear it.
-
Thief
Cardsharp
Did you see a werewolf near the Station? He has the Ace! Tender, vulnerable card in the clutches of that hairy monster... Please, rescue the Ace, quickly!
I was so worried while you were gone. Even my top hat sweated with excitement! Have you brought the Ace? Great, all the clubs are assembled.
-
Two Suits
Cardsharp
I spread a few combinations and the cards confirmed my guess: the Top Clubs are near where the lower ones were. You claim they aren’t there? But they could be nearby, at the Station, say. Cards don’t lie; it’s worth checking.
We now have Clubs and Hearts, black and red, righteous warriors and crafty fellows – they balance each other. Half the deck is in my hands... Oh no! The Ace of Clubs is missing!
-
Severe Clubs
Cardsharp
Clubs are next. When that plane crashed into the Station I felt a burst of magical energy - my cards calling. They must have been hidden nearby and the accident woke them. Magic cards can’t be damaged by fire, but I’m still worried about my Club Suit. Please find it quickly!
You found only the lower clubs? But I can feel the otheres in the Station area! Give me them, I want to hold them in my hands again.
-
Talking cards
Cardsharp
I spoke to the cards you found. The lower Hearts told me their higher brothers and sisters were near a gilded gate - the Manor House Gate. How can Cards talk? Not with words but the combinations when they’re spread. This Deck... I can use it to play the whole City. I’ll tell you later what it means and let you learn wonderful things. But now, please, look for the remaining cards by the Gate.
Now I have all the Hearts. I was wrong to doubt your abilities.
-
Tricky Hearts
Cardsharp
The Seven of Hearts is quite symbolic! It means we should start our search with this suit. Take another look in the café; maybe the remaining Hearts are hidden there, too.
Six, Eight, Nine, Ten... It seems the City itself sent you to me! Only the Top Hearts are left! You haven’t found them in the Café, right? Hmm... Where could the Collector have hidden them?
-
Seven
Cardsharp
If you help find the Magic Deck, I’ll give you the Joker. This special card can turn into any of the City’s amulets. My amazing deck is inseparably linked with the Red Rose Café, but I can no longer enter. Will you look inside? If not the cards themselves, at least some trace of them...
The seven of hearts - one of my cards! I haven’t seen it for years but you found it so quickly. You should ask the Collector how it got there. I hate him so much! Later, I’ll tell you what happened to him.

CAUSE OF THE DISASTER
Detective
Buddy, it seems the boggarts took the flight data recorder from the crash site. It looks like a bright orange ball and records all the flight parameters and the crew’s conversations. Let’s find the stolen device. I think we’ll manage faster with artifacts. Please lend me some.
Look, the artifacts have formed a bright beam that indicates some kind of device. It’s the flight data recorder! But how do we extract all the information from it now? I’ll show it to Martha. She should know exactly what to do with it. Thank you for your help.
-
VALUABLE RECORDING
Detective
Buddy, we’d better not go to the crash site right now. It’s too dangerous there. Right in front of my eyes, the boggarts pulled off an item that looked like a voice recorder from the plane. It can contain valuable recordings made before the crash. Help me retrieve it!
You managed to find the voice recorder. Quick, let’s listen to what’s recorded on it. "A Dark Fog cloud appeared on our way. It’s enveloping the plane and all the devices are going crazy. It seems that a crash is inevitable..." Buddy, the sound cuts out here. I’ll try to restore the recording.
-
LUCKY FIND
Isabelle
We’re using the jar of jam you found to attract the boggarts. I’m sure they’ve already smelled its alluring sweet scent and are about to flock here. When the jam weakens the boggarts’ watchfulness, we’ll take the things they stole from the crash site.
The jar of jam worked! I see you wasted no time and found a life jacket. I also found a few things from that plane. We’ll take them back to the crash site so that later we can recreate the scene of the accident in more detail.
-
HUNTING WITH A CAMERA
Isabelle
I’ve been studying boggarts for a long time, but I still don’t know what they look like. The fact is that it’s a very nimble anomaly. But I want to try to take a picture of boggarts with a special camera. Let’s go explore a place where they might be hiding.
Great, I managed to take a picture of the boggarts. Here it is... But the location in the picture looks completely different, as if it was taken somewhere else. It seems that boggarts are able to distort pictures. That’s why there are no photos of this anomaly!
-
SWEET BAIT
Isabelle
The boggarts stole valuable items from the plane that could help us discover the cause of the crash. I almost succeeded in tracking down the anomaly, but the boggarts hid when they heard me. I know they like sweets. Let’s try to lure them out. Find a jar of jam to attract them!
I see you found a jar of delicious jam. Mmm... The boggarts will flock to it as soon as we open the lid. So, are you ready to lure out these petty thieves and retrieve the things they stole from the crashed plane?
-
MYSTERIOUS CRASH
Isabelle
We’ll still have the opportunity to investigate the crashed plane. Now it’s more important to return the things stolen from there. I think I found the anomaly’s trail. Look, there’s an oxygen mask. I’m sure it was stolen by the boggarts!
You retrieved the oxygen mask from the crashed plane from the boggarts. It wasn’t easy! I’ll try to determine where the anomaly went next. Thanks for the help!

Heart-to-heart Talk
Martha
Mayor still hasn’t said where he hid the key to the Exploration Chest? Well, there is one more way to peek into a spirit’s memories - a séance. I will need something that belonged to him, his favourite cane, for instance. If you can find it and I conduct a successful séance with the Mayor’s ghost, he’ll remember even his grandmother’s maiden name. I promise.
You are cleverer than I thought. The Spirits were right about your extraordinary skill at finding unusual items. Okay, let’s join hands – I’m starting the ritual. You may ask your question now.
-
Frozen Memories
Martha
Making film for the memory camera is a work of art! And I’m a seer, not an artist! But of course I can do it. Magical dust is, actually, a task for a novice magician but the coating process is a hassle. The dust goes everywhere and burns your eyes. I won’t do it unless you bring me protective spectacles.
We have film. We can make one more photo and, hopefully, the Mayor will remember something about the Exploration Chest. There’s a city square in the picture of Mayor’s memories. The Mayor himself is in the middle of it but why is it so dark around him? What kind of a memory is this? Let’s show him the photo.
-
Magic Photo
Cardsharp
We need film for the camera - a special one coated with magic emulsion. It can’t be found in the City these days but, luckily, I put one away for a rainy day. Find it.
Great, now I can take a photo of the Mayor’s memories. Mayor, sir, please take a look at that photo. Do you remember something?
-
Truth is out there
Cardsharp
Once, the Camera of Memories was nearly stolen from me by boggarts. After that I hid it in a safe place. It’s time to find the Camera and use it to help the Mayor’s Ghost recall the past.
We need to take a picture of the Mayor. The photos will reveal one of his memories. Some of the pictures may help him remember his past. And if he remembers, he’ll tell us the key’s location.
-
The key!
Martha
We have the Mayor’s Seal, now we need the key to the City Gates. It must be somewhere in the City, unless it’s been stolen by gargoyles since they’re attracted to shiny things. If you are brave enough, get the key to the City Gates from the gargoyles.
Thank you. The seal and the key will help me to find the ghost of the Mayor in the spiritual world. His spirit will appear now and you can ask him about opening the Chest. See, here he is...
-
The Seal of the Past
Martha
I could conduct a séance and summon the Mayor’s spirit. To do so I need a couple of items that still bear his essence... As Mayor, he must have possessed the City ??Seal and the Key to the City. First, you should find the Seal.
What a beautiful thing! It features the City’s ancient emblem. However, the seal has worn down over the years and I can’t make out the detail. No matter, I’m sure it’ll prove useful.
-
Where’s The Coffee?
Conductor
Since we’re in a café, would you bring me a mug of coffee? Refreshing yourself before such a serious matter won’t do any harm. Besides, after a shot of caffeine I grasp things better...
Thank you.

Old photos
Cardsharp
How can we find this mysterious Keeper? A wonderful idea has crossed my mind! There are portraits of famous city dwellers in the City Hall. You could compare them with the picture from the newspaper.
Here’s the portrait we’ve been looking for. What’s written on the plate beneath? “City Mayor.” So, the citizens entrusted the Chest Key to their Mayor?
-
Search the Past
Cardsharp
Did you open the City Dungeons doors? I’ve learned that the City’s Exploration Chest is there, with the artifacts that can change the City’s rules. I’ve found it, but it’s locked and there’s no key. Maybe old records will tell us where it may be?
You found a piece of a newspaper? It’s at least a hundred years old and has almost completely faded. I’ll try to read it but I need to find my golden pince-nez.

Treasures of the Fog
Juliette
Mon ami, when the fog cleared I spotted some items in the square. If you bring them to me we can see what they are.
The fog gifted us a rare artifact - the Hand of Midas. Martha, the City’s medium, has one like it. The item bestows great luck on its bearer when it comes to finding gold coins. Take it - it’s yours now.
