The Way Home
Inspector
We’ve found the Mafia’s secret hiding place and learned that Angela Crowley followed Lucaccio to the City centre. They had a special key that opened both a way out of the City and a passage to the centre of the City of Shadows, to the House with Red Windows. Maybe we could get our hands on a key like that some day.
-
Flipping over the Cards
Mayor
You did it! Look, letters are appearing on the note we found in the violin case! We’re almost there!
-
A Vintage Case
Detective
I bet there’s some kind of small, elegant gun hidden in a Violin Case. Please try to find one. With an arsenal like this we could search the entire sewer system without having to worry about creatures. I’m sure we’ll be able to find the mobsters’ hiding place. And it’s all thanks to Mr. Lucaccio!
I found an Apache in the Violin Case - it’s a very old and elegant gun. It’s a pistol, brass knuckles, and a knife all rolled into one. Once we’ve searched the sewers and found the five families’ hiding place, I’ll give the Apache to Juliette. I’m sure she won’t need it, but it’ll still give me peace of mind. Let’s see... Hey, what’s this at the bottom of the case? It’s a piece of sheet music! It must be another message.
-
Blues for Pistol and Orchestra
Detective
I’m feeling wistful for the sound of a saxophone! But we don’t have time for nostalgia right now. Find a Saxophone Case! I don’t even know what kind of gun the mobsters hid in it, but it’ll definitely come in handy while we look for the five families’ secret hiding place in the sewers.
There was a Mauser hidden in the Saxophone Case you found. All right, we’re pretty much armed to the teeth now. The sewer creatures ought to scatter when they hear us coming. I feel like I’m ready to head out in search of the Mafia’s secret hiding place!
-
A Hidden Threat
Detective
I love the sound of the cello. I’m talking about real cellos, of course, not what the mobsters hid in the case. Based on the dimensions, I’d say you could fit a shotgun in there. Let’s find one and get some more protection against sewer creatures while we look for the Mafia’s secret hiding place. Oh... I think I can already hear something growling down in the pipe!
You found a Cello Case! Be careful with it - the mobsters hid a shotgun and a couple of hand grenades in there. It’s a truly shocking arsenal! Once this is all over and we’ve found the five families’ hiding place, I’m going to put all this stuff behind lock and key. Better safe than sorry...
-
A Popular Hiding Place
Huntress
There should be a Guitar Case somewhere. Try looking next to the pipe. I wonder what kind of gun the mobsters hid inside... Regardless, the new guns will help us get through the underground area unscathed.
Great, we have a Guitar Case, and inside it is... oh, a magnificent Browning! It fits right in the palm of your hand! Even if we run into sewer creatures, the mobsters’ hidden guns will save our skins. I can tell we’re getting closer and closer to the secret hiding place!
-
A Stringed Bruiser
Inspector
Let’s start our search with a Double Bass Case. It’s the largest one and should be easy to find. I’ll wager there’s a tommy gun inside. With an arsenal like this, we won’t have to fear any underground creatures! We’re definitely going to find the Mafia’s secret hiding place here.
Bene, piccio... Shoot! Never mind. Way to go, you found a Double Bass Case with a tommy gun inside. Let’s keep looking and try to find another weapon so we can defend ourselves against sewer creatures and find the secret Mafia hiding place.
-
Tribute to Omerta
Detective
We’ve collected all the hats - proof of the Mafia traitors’ deaths - that Lucky Lucaccio demanded in his note. We need to offer them as a tribute to omerta, and, if Lucky is to be believed, the entrance to the secret hiding place will open. But all criminals are dishonest people. I’d advise you to be very careful - the passage to the secret hiding place might be booby-trapped.
-
A Classic with a Bent Brim
Inspector
We still need to find the hat of the last Mafia traitor on the list: Gino Gambitti. It’s probably that solid-looking Homburg made of grey felt over on the bench. Bring it here. I can’t wait to open the passage to the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
Nice work! We’ve got the Homburg that belonged to Gino Gambitti, the Mafia traitor. These mobsters are harsh, but I don’t really feel sorry for gangsters who probably had God only knows how many murders on their conscience. But they had plenty of reasons to turn on the Mafia. As they say, "Who am I to judge?"
-
Historical Exoticism
Detective
I don’t think anyone wears boaters anymore. I saw one on the steps. Bring it here. All I can say for sure is that its owner isn’t among the living. That’s just what we need. The Mafia bosses are waiting for proof of the traitors’ deaths.
Thanks for finding Giovanni Floriano’s Boater, partner. Are you sure you weren’t a cop in the real world? Well, it doesn’t matter. Once we find the last hat the passage to the five families’ secret hiding place will open.
-
A Broad-Brimmed Version
Isabelle
I’m starting to get the hang of the gangsters’ fashion sense after all these missions. According to Juliette, this hat is called a Borsalino. Bring it here, and we’ll find out who it belonged to. Hopefully it’ll help us open the passage to the secret hiding place of the legendary five families.
You found the Borsalino! It belonged to Jim Ribinolli, who crossed the boss of one of the five families. Generally speaking, every betrayal happens for a reason, but we don’t have time to get into the details right now. Just a little more work and then we’ll be able to open the passage to the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
-
An Elegant Piece
Juliette
Hey, I think I see a Trilby in the tree. Please bring it back so we can find out who it belonged to. I don’t think I can reach it. This must be one of the five hats we need to open the passage to the mobsters’ secret hiding place.
Thanks for bringing me the Trilby. It’s an elegant piece. It’s got a signature on it: "Emilio Rupporo". This is just what we need. Now we just have to find three more hats belonging to men who betrayed the Cosa Nostra in order to open the passage to the secret Mafia hiding place.
-
The Haberdasher’s Nightmare
Inspector
There’s a reason the mob bosses listed the traitors’ names in their last message. I’m almost certain that the hats scattered around the clearing have been signed. Let’s start at the beginning of the list. Look for Giuseppe Almano’s hat. I hope I’m right and you can pull this off.
This elegant Fedora has a tag with the letter G on it. It’s Almano’s. I don’t even want to think about the fact that it’s owner is dead. The whole thing gives me the creeps. Let’s find the others so we can open the passage to the five families’ secret hiding place.
-
Smoke ’Em if You Got ’Em
Detective
Could we have made a mistake? We found all the cigar cases belonging to the five mob bosses, but nothing is happening in the photograph.\n\n The six mob bosses are still just standing there in the picture. Five of them are smoking like chimneys, and only the sixth one, Lucky, has no cigar.\n\n The riddle went like this: "Let’s start by giving our good friend Lucky a smoke." But how do we do that?
Eccelente, partner! The magic of the City’s artifacts has saved the day again! Look at the photograph, a cigar has now appeared in Lucky’s hand.
-
Shiny Things and the Poverty of Kings
Inspector
I think I saw a cigar case with "Luconi" inscribed on it over in the corner. Oh, the Luconi family was one of the oldest Mafia clans in New York, although it began as an ordinary street gang in Brooklyn. Bring it to me and Lucky will give us a hint about where to find the Mafia’s secret hiding place! I can’t wait to find out what’s hidden there.
It’s the Luconi cigar case, the only one made of wood! At least one person from the five families had a sense of moderation. Although it didn’t really do him any good. In 1925 their boss was shot dead by Vito Gioveneso himself, thus starting a war between the Mafia families. We already know how it all ended. Lucky ought to be pleased by our collection. Maybe now he’ll finally tell us where to find the secret hiding place.
-
The Second Name
Detective
Well, here’s why we’ve spent so much time looking for this cigar case! You know, the Colombino family used to call itself the Profitto family in honour of the boss Joe Profitto. Look for an engraving like that. We can’t stop now! We’ve almost collected all the cigar cases. We just need two more and then Lucky will give us a hint about where the find the five families’ secret hiding place - and Ms. Crowley.
Nicely done, pal! I guessed right. You found the cigar case signed by Joe Profitto, although it actually belonged to the Colombino family. We’ve almost collected all the cigar cases. We just need one more, and then Lucky will give us our next hint.
-
Shiny Things and Conflict
Inspector
Has he really figured it out? I can see a cigar case and the name of the Gioveneso family is encrusted on it with diamonds. Be that as it may, let’s collect all the cigar cases and find out what Lucky can tell us about the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
Wow, those glittering diamonds on Gioveneso’s cigar case are blinding! Let’s find the other cigar cases and wrap this up. Speaking of Vito Gioveneso, he’s considered to be the one who started the famous Castellammarese War; where gangsters vied with each other for control of New York. Hopefully Lucky will be satisfied.
-
Living High on the Hog isn’t a Crime
Alex
Do my eyes deceive me or is there a gold cigar case on that bench? It must have belonged to Carlo Gambito, the inspiration for Vito Corleone in the "The Godfather". Have you seen it? No? Well, forget about the movie, just bring me the cigar case so Lucky will tell us where the Mafia hiding place is. We can’t save Angela Crowley without it.
Gosh, those Mafia guys sure lived high on the hog! Is the next one diamond-encrusted or something? Regardless, we need all five cigar cases to get Lucky to tell us where the secret Mafia hiding place is.
-
Stylish Lettering
Detective
That’s Joe Bonini’s cigar case - it’s made of leather and has his name on it. Pretty slick. I sure wouldn’t mind having one like it. Let’s find the other ones so Lucky can finally light up and give us a hint about where to find the five families’ secret hiding place.
-
The Ghostly Puzzle
Inspector
There’s some kind of sorcery at play here... We’ve got all the lighters, but the mobsters still haven’t given us a hint about where to find the secret hiding place! We solved part of Volanni’s puzzle correctly, but I think we’re missing an important piece of the riddle. Find some City artifacts. They will read the lighters’ auras and make the missing piece appear.
Ottimo! It worked! Fascinating... The City artifacts led us to a photograph.
-
A Historical Wonder
Detective
Finally! Now we just need to find the last lighter, and then we can solve old Joe Volanni’s mysterious hint about the Mafia’s secret hiding place. I think we should try to find something antique - something made by one of the oldest manufacturers. Lighters like those are symbols of prestige and reliability. How do I know that? Well, pal, nowadays I allow myself one cigarette a day, but back in the day I used to smoke like a chimney!
It looks pretty unusual, doesn’t it? This model looks like some kind of weird aqua-lung. Whilst looking for the last lighter of the five Mafia bosses you found a piece of paper along with it... what’s written on it?
-
In Honour of the Volcano
Detective
Unless I’m mistaken, we should look for a lighter connected to Italy. Something that fits our Sicilian friends like a glove. Unfortunately, I haven’t got a clue what the model looks like, so you’re going to have to look for yourself. I hope you can pull it off, or we won’t get a hint about where to find the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
Hey, you did it! Nice work! Check it out, this lighter looks completely stylish - very Italian - and it was made in honour of the eruption of Mt. Etna in 1936. Now we just need to find the last lighter and we’ll "receive the Lord’s blessing" or however Volanni put it. Hopefully I deciphered his code correctly and by "blessing" he meant "hint."
-
A Mechanical Tchotchke
Inspector
Those Mafia bosses probably had all the latest gadgets, including an automatic lighter. They combine style with convenience. Let’s find one so we can get a little closer to solving the mystery of the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
Wow, this is one of the first automatic lighters! These things made a big splash at the time. I never expected to see one here in the City of Shadows. I used to have one just like it. I’m actually getting a little wistful... Eh, whatever!
-
A Fancy Accessory
Juliette
If you notice something excessively shiny, that’s the lighter we need. If you ask me, these fashionable doodads are more appropriate for ladies. However, those Mafia guys needed lighters just like these in order to tell us where to find the five families’ secret hiding place. Let’s look for one.
Here it is! It looks like a cross between a harmonica and a bar of gold. I wonder which member of the mafia it belonged to... Probably some fancy-pants. Okay, let’s find the rest of the lighters. Then we’ll get a hint about where to find the five families’ secret hiding place.
-
Always in Style
Detective
In the message Joe Volanni talked about lighting sources of flame at the train station. My guess is that he’s referring to expensive lighters like the ones mobsters carelessly play with before the eyes of prisoners soaked in gasoline.\n Partner, we’ve got to find five lighters that belonged to the bosses of the five Mafia families; then we’ll get the next hint about where to find the Mafia’s secret hiding place! Look carefully. I hope you can pull this off.
Wow, this lighter is a real classic! Did you know that you can literally trace the history of America by following models from various times? For example, the lighter you found is simple, with no inscriptions or other excesses. It’s one of the first collector’s models from the 30s. Let’s find the others so we can get a hint about where to find the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
-
Magical Workshop
Detective
Well, buddy, I’ve been attaching the spare parts onto the tape recorder for hours now. However, my fears have come true: we’ve collected and assembled all the parts but the tape recorder is stubbornly refusing to work. Darn it, we can’t give up! We need to listen to the interrogation of Joe Volanni and find out where the Mafia’s secret hiding place is. I know that most problems with electronic devices within the City of Shadow can be solved by using the City’s magic.
The tape recorder is working! Look, the tape in the cassette is starting to move slowly. Our perseverance will finally pay off! We’re about to hear Joe Volanni’s testimony...
-
Device Cover
Inspector
I did the right thing by asking you for help. When our investigation began we didn’t have anything, but now we’ve got all the spare parts we need to fix the tape recorder. I just hope the recording on the tape wasn’t damaged during the scuffle!
-
In a Pinch
Detective
I need a Pinch Wheel to finish fixing the tape recorder. It’s a gizmo that looks like a little wheel. Once you find it we’ll be able to secure the tape in place and listen to Joe Volanni’s testimony. The Mafia’s secret hiding place is almost ours!
Splendid! The Pinch Wheel can reliably hold tapes in place. Soon I’ll be able to fix the tape recorder and listen to what Joe Volanni said about the Mafia’s secret hiding place. As the cops say, no matter how twisted the thread might be, the truth always comes out in the end. We’re going to find the secret hiding place of these five families!
-
The Missing Circuit Board
Inspector
The microchip in the tape recorder is all rusted up. It’s completely disabled. I’m not sure, but Ms. Crowley might have had something similar in her garden. We should check it out. Hey, what’s that shiny thing over there? Hopefully it’s the part we need.
The Microchip fits perfectly. I’ve almost fixed the tape recorder. You’ve been an amazing help, pal! We only need a few more spare parts. I can’t stop thinking about Volanni’s testimony. We’ll have the tape recorder fixed soon, and then we’ll find out where to find the Mafia’s secret hiding place and Ms. Crowley!
-
The Spring Mechanism
Detective
You still want to hear what Volanni said about the Mafia’s secret hiding place, right? Then find a weird gizmo that looks like a tightly-coiled spring. We need it to fix the tape recorder.
This spring is a perfect fit for the cassette receiver. Darn it, it’s so bizarre trying to fix a tape recorder in such a beautiful place. Hopefully we’ll find a way to return Ms. Crowley to her typewriter.
-
An Important Part
Inspector
Angela Crowley did some very impressive work. If we follow the tracks of her investigation we’ll probably find her kidnappers’ trail, and maybe even the Mafia’s hiding place. Where should we start? The Volanni case contains several testimony tapes, but I can’t listen to them because my tape recorder’s broken. To listen to Volanni’s testimony, you’ll need to find several parts and fix it. Let’s start by trying to find a Cassette Receiver.
This looks like a working Cassette Receiver. It’s just what we need to fix the tape recorder. How can you find anything in this mess? You’ve got a real talent! We need to find the other spare parts for the tape recorder so we can listen to Joe Volanni’s testimony and find the Mafia’s secret hiding place.
-
We need to look into it.
Inspector
Well, even though I’m in the City of Shadows, I’m still Inspector Charles Dipp! I need to start a new investigation: the disappearance of my dear friend and writer, Angela Crowley. I’m sure there’s a connection to that Mafia case where she found new clues. Let’s get to work!
-
THE WRITER’S DISAPPEARANCE
Inspector
Angela Crowley has millions of readers. What will happen if they find out that their favorite author has disappeared into obscurity? Hmm, her books will quickly sell out, of course, but I wouldn’t want success for Angela at such a price. Let’s look for her in the park!
Looks like there’s no one in the park. I won’t forgive myself if my friend is in trouble. I wish I could find at least some clue... Look, there are Angela’s papers on the table. Maybe they will help us. Let’s examine the records!
-
LET’S HURRY TO THE RESCUE
Inspector
We’re one step away from entering the location. What will we find there? New mysteries of the City are waiting to be uncovered. Go on, enter!
The location is now open! Do you feel the pull of new adventures? The magic of the City is calling out to us!
-
Visit Your Friends!
Valerie
I love visiting my friends - it’s so much more fun to explore nooks and crannies of the City together. Imagine each of your friends visiting you and giving you several nice bonuses. Visit your friend - they’ll return the favor.
You did it! Did you like visiting your friend? It’s great to drop by on your friends, they’re always looking forward to your coming!
-
Cosy Patio
Conductor
With your help, the Yard of Forgotten Toys has become cosy again. Now you can put in the Garden Watchman - it will ensure that everything doesn’t become overgrown. Now I’ll never have to do this task again! Do me a favour; bring a few artifacts to summon the Garden Watchman.
Hmm, I imagined the Garden Watchman would look different. But this version is very, very good. See how it fits into the overall design of the yard! Thank you for helping to bring back order. I don’t like being in anyone’s debt, so here’s a small reward from me.
-
Blooming Flowerbeds
Conductor
We’ve almost straightened up the Yard of Forgotten Toys. All that’s left is to water the flowerbeds. Did you see a Watering Can anywhere? No? Well, I’m sure you’ll quickly find one. Please bring it to me.
Such a good Watering Can filled with water. Thank you. I’ll water the flower beds and everything is as good as done! I’ll report to the Mayor that the Yard of Forgotten Toys is finally in order and ready for the Garden Watchman so that it always remains this clean.
-
Falling Leaves
Conductor
Did you notice the tree in the Yard of Forgotten Toys? It’s not your normal tree, yet its leaves still turn yellow and fall off to the ground. I gathered all the leaves into piles, but I can’t carry them out of the yard in my hands. Bring me some kind of Bucket.
What an excellent Bucket - big and spacious. I’ll put all the dry leaves in it and carry them from the yard to clear the place for the Garden Watchman! Isabelle promised that when it’s here, it will handle the fallen leaves.
-
Trimmed Bushes
Conductor
The Garden Watchman won’t settle into an unkempt place, and the bushes in the yard have completely grown wild. It wouldn’t hurt to give them some shape. The truth is, I have no idea where to find Pruning Shears. Help me find them, please.
Excellent Pruning Shears! I can trim the bushes with them in no time. Well, or you can try them out for yourself, if you want. Hopefully the Garden Watchman will settle in and take over this job.
-
Manicured Paths
Conductor
Since you’ve decided to help me with the overgrown Yard of Forgotten Toys, we’ll approach the process properly. Search for a Weeder. It will help us deal with the grass that is growing over the paths.
Great. You’ve brought a Weeder. We can easily use it to remove the grass from the paths, and then the Garden Watchman will settle in and the weeds in the Yard of Forgotten Toys will be vanquished forever!
-
Overgrown Yard
Conductor
The Garden Watchman will protect the Yard of Forgotten Toys against new weeds and litter. However, first we need to make it look well cared for again. A Garden Watchman only settles into a clean place. Bring a Shovel and we can dig up all the weeds.
You found a Shovel? Thank you! I didn’t want to bother you, but I’m truly grateful for your help. Now I’m able to dig up all the weeds in the yard.
-
Shoot Fire
Isabelle
Until now, the Huntress was unable to capture the strange monster that recently appeared in the City. I have carefully examined all the weapons she used against it, and looked through some ancient magical writings. I’m certain I can create an instrument to defeat it. I require many artifacts. Bring them.
Great! With your help I was able to create a Chu-Ko-Nu - a multi-shot, Eastern crossbow. Ordinary bolts, as well as special firework arrows, can be used as ammunition. I hope the Chu-Ko-Nu will not disappoint the Huntress. I must confess this is the first time I’ve created such a weapon.
-
Throw and Immobilise
Huntress
According to Isabelle, powerful protective magic is connected to the new monster that has appeared in the City.\n I’ve learned that there is a weapon in the City capable of standing against it - the metal bladed "Dragon’s Tail". Only a master at searching, such as you, can find it.
You managed to find the metal bladed Dragon’s Tail! If everything they say about it is true, then I’ll be able to immobilise the newly appeared monster. Isabelle can then figure out how to take it to the laboratory for experiments.
-
Flexible and Powerful
Isabelle
To capture the unidentified monster, I suggest the Huntress take advantage of some unconventional weapons. A Chain Whip is made of gold, silver, mercury and permeated with magical solar threads. Bring it. But hold it only by the handle and not by the whip end.
Yes, this is the right Chain Whip. Thank you. Using it in my experiments, I was able to stop all of the monsters I know of. I hope it has an effect on the creature the Huntress saw.
-
Piercing Light
Isabelle
I inspected the Huntress’s weapon, a casualty of her battle with the unknown monster. The remnants of dark magic are very apparent. This is protective magic, interwoven very skilfully. I haven’t entirely made sense of it yet. I can recommend Lunar Blades to the Huntress. Would you mind bringing them?
I made these Lunar Blades from the thorns of iron gargoyles, upon which the magic of moonlight is laid. I hope the Huntress can defeat the newly arrived monster with such a weapon. It wouldn’t hurt us to take a look at it.
-
Special Dagger
Huntress
Recently I encountered the unidentified monster again; where it immediately tried to attack me.\n I always have my Dragon Knife with me. As I threw it, the monster disappeared without a trace and so did the Dragon Knife. My search resulted in nothing. Would you be able to find it?
Just look! The Dragon Knife is melted around the edges just like Kitana’s fan! It can’t be a coincidence - it’s definitely the work of some dark magic. We need to consult with Isabelle.
-
Dangerous Fan
Huntress
Recently I saw a strange creature in the vicinity of the temple and I began to chase after it. I even tried to hit it with a bladed Kitana’s Fan. But the fan passed through the monster and became stuck in the wall. The monster felt no effect and I had to quickly escape. Now I want my fan back. It’s a very useful item. Please help me find it.
Look at the fan’s edges, where Kitana’s sharpened blades stick out. The edges are melted. You know, Kitana’s blades are made according to a special Eastern technology. It’s very, very difficult to damage such a weapon. Interesting! Is this the effect of the monster or some kind of magic?
-
Dismiss the illusion
Isabelle
"Moves" has turned out to be a useful anomaly in mini-games, but permanently stopping time is not the best effect, as you can imagine. Use the Glowing Skull to dispel it. It’s able to cleanse a person’s aura. Dispel the anomaly and the passage of time will resume in your game.
Congratulations! You have successfully dispelled the anomaly, and now time will pass normally in the mini-game. You can use either the Glowing Skull or Magic Lamp to play the game the way you want.
-
Astringent Smoke
Isabelle
I thought that the "Moves" anomaly, which occasionally appears in mini-games, could be quite useful. I’ve created a device that can be used to summon this anomaly. Use my Magic Lamp - its special enchanted smoke will summon the "Moves" effect!
Outstanding! It worked after all! The Magic Lamp summoned the "Moves" anomaly... Truth be told, I wasn’t sure if I’d made the right selection of herbs. Now you can use my lamp and its smoke to summon this phenomenon.
-
Unlimited Time
Isabelle
An unexpected phenomenon has been detected in the City of Shadows. Many of the City’s effects alter the passage of time, but this new anomaly has gone above and beyond... it’s stopped time entirely. It’s necessary to familiarise yourself with this mysterious phenomenon. Test yourself by playing a mini-game with the "Moves" anomaly.
Great! You have completed the mini-game with the "Moves" anomaly. Well, how did it go? What do you think? Some folks say that this phenomenon makes completing the mini-game easier, but you won’t know for sure until you try it.
-
Martha’s Past
Martha
Unfortunately, I can’t restore the blood connection to the spirit of my dead sister. However, I know of a way to link our souls again. I’ll use the magic of the City of Shadows and create an Amulet of Astral Connection. Are you ready to help me? Bring a few urban artifacts for the ritual.
Outstanding! You’ve helped me create an Amulet of Astral Connection for me and my dead sister Erin. Now our souls can communicate with each other. We have so much to say... I won’t ask my sister about what happened to her in the House of Red Windows, but I’m sure that one day I will learn the circumstances of her death. Not to mention the role Leonardo played in all this.
-
Keys to the Past
Mayor
-
Hiding Place with a Whirlwind
Martha
Thank you so much! You’ve found all of the amazing and paradoxical items into which I disassembled the box containing the memories I wrote down during a trance. Now I can combine these constituent elements and finally learn what happened in the House with Red Windows. But I’m still too weak after the ordeal I experienced on the astral plane. Please help me by bringing a few City artifacts so I can get my strength back.
-
Elegant Perfection
Martha
The last item that allowed me to make the box for my memories was a shell. I chose it because nature created the shell on the basis of a perfect logarithmic spiral. Anyone who moves along this spiral will always maintain a constant perspective on the centre of their motion, just as the box contains its contents despite all the passing years.
Oh, thank you! You found the shell. Its whorls correspond to one another in a proportion known as the "golden mean". This is the last constituent element I need to recreate the box containing my memories. Now I can finally learn what happened in the House with Red Windows and what became of my Erin! I can’t believe that this mystery is about to be solved!
-
Eternal Connection
Valerie
Now we just have to find two more items to get the box containing Martha’s memories about the time she spent in the House with Red Windows. I think one of the items could easily be a symbol of infinity. It looks like a figure eight, but on its side. Could you try to find it?
Wow! Eternity in the shape of a snake biting its own tail. I’ve read that it’s a symbol of an endless process called Uroboros. Hey, that’s also what Martha called her python! That’s funny...
-
Expert Recommendation
Conductor
I heard you’re collecting unbelievable items in order to open a box containing Martha’s memories. Is that true? Try to find a Klein Bottle.\n Its surface never ends. You can only see it in four-dimensional space, of course, so to the naked eye it just looks like a bottle with two extra openings at the bottom and on the side.\n Why are you looking at me like that? I just know a lot about bottles, okay!
Congratulations, you found the Klein Bottle! Its internal and external sides are the same. A fly crawling along its surface could get to the inside from the outside without going from one surface to another. I’m glad this thing turned out to be what you needed. I’m always happy to help.
-
Two in One
Detective
Martha disassembled the box in which her memories were stored into impossible mathematical doodads. I’m no expert when it comes to this stuff, but I’m familiar with the Mobius strip. You know, that thingy that looks like a twisty... strip. Try to find the Mobius Strip, buddy.
Great job, pal, that’s just what we need! The Mobius Strip! It only has a single endless surface, and if you move along it you can get from the top of the strip to the bottom. Look, even if you crumple the strip up, it doesn’t lose its characteristics. It remains one-sided, unending, doubly connected and non-directional.
-
Illusionary Figure
Martha
The box in which my memories are stored cannot be found on the astral plane or in the real world. The Collector and I disassembled it into its constituent elements in order to give it greater protection. These elements appear as paradoxical mathematical objects, which you’ll have to find.\n The box cannot be seen or touched, and yet it still exists. It has the properties of an impossible object. That’s why the first element is an Escher Cube. Find it.
Congratulations, you found the Escher Cube! It cannot be created. It exists only as a drawing and represents nothing more than an illusion. Just like the box containing my lost memories...
-
The Might of Maturity
Isabelle
Just a little more effort and I’ll be able to get the Medium’s Key; the third and final key that will bring Martha’s lost soul back from the astral plane. You’ve collected items that describe Martha’s path from a fortune teller in the French Quarters of New Orleans to an international star who was on a first-name basis with the great Houdini. However, these items have very powerful magical energy. Help me master them by bringing me a few City artifacts.
Wonderful! Thanks to you, we now have the Medium’s Key! Look how different it is from the Keys to Childhood and Adolescence - it’s simple, made of bronze, and only has a little insignia on it shaped like a lily. But real magic has no need for fancy details, and... look, Martha is regaining consciousness!
-
The Master’s Trump Card
Detective
Hey, I never knew Martha managed to come to the City of Shadows with the help of Harry Houdini, the illusionist who could free himself from handcuffs without a key!\n It seems they have some connection to Martha’s past, and this is the last item we need to save her. Find Houdini’s Handcuffs, buddy.
You’ve found Houdini’s Handcuffs! They’re really heavy. I can’t imagine how he took them off while hanging upside-down beneath the roof of a skyscraper, at the bottom of a river, or especially in the barrel of a cannon with a lit fuse! I wouldn’t be surprised if Houdini was also a wizard... but let’s hurry and try to find Martha. We’re just a step away from summoning the Medium’s Key and bringing her soul back from the astral plane!

Worldwide Recognition
Juliette
I once saw a photograph of Martha on a stage. I noticed her brooch - it was the symbol of her recognition as Martha the Most Powerful. This is a very important part of her past. It will help us summon the Medium’s Key, the last key we need to save Martha from oblivion. Mon ami, please find that brooch!
Mon ami, thank you for finding Martha’s brooch. It’s so beautiful! This sapphire eye in a diamond frame is one of the symbols and pillars of her life, a reflection of her fame and universal recognition. This valuable charm will be a worthy contribution to the Medium’s Key we need to bring Martha back to life!

Entering a Trance
Cardsharp
My friend! I’ve got an idea about something the magnificent Martha might have used during the dawn of her career in New Orleans. I think you should look for an incense holder or some kind of brass cup for incense and other herbs, yes? Medium’s salons, well... they tend to smell rather odd. They say the scents help them enter their trance.
Yes, yes, that’s exactly what I had in mind. An Incense Holder! Note what a fine piece this is. She obviously spared no expense on it, which means that Martha’s business was booming. The incense holder still stin... er, smells like aromatic resin. Achoo! You don’t have a handkerchief on you, do you? Hopefully this rather fragrant item will help us get Martha back.

The Experiments Continue
Isabelle
It isn’t hard to guess which items of Martha’s are connected to her work as a fortune teller in New Orleans. Every self-respecting fortune teller has a Ouija board. The most important part of the board is the triangle. The spirits move it along words burnt into the wood, thereby connecting them to the world of the living.\n Find Martha’s Ouija Board Triangle.
Wonderful! You’ve found the Ouija Board Triangle. By the way, this is an interesting model. I’ve never seen one like it before. Look, instead of a magnifying glass, there’s a burnished sapphire set in it. This is a very interesting idea of Martha’s to increase magical flow... Martha had mastered séance rituals when she made this. Only the most advanced mediums are capable of that. We’re learning so much about her!
-
Eye-Catching Ad
Juliette
I’ve been to Paris and there are lots of clairvoyant salons in Montmartre. They used to write about the best mediums in the papers, and there were even posters and notices about them everywhere. I think Martha also had a salon, and its poster probably occupied a worthy spot on a New Orleans bulletin board. I’m sure that this poster is the first step to getting the third key. Find it, mon ami.
Mon dieu, you did it! Oh, what a colourful, eye-catching, professional-looking poster Martha had! "Martha Myth, fortune teller. Spiritism, searching for lost people, hypnosis, tarot readings and mirror divination." And she was really expensive... Martha must have had more clients than she could handle!

Acquiring Skills
Cardsharp
My dear friend! We’ve finally collected all the items we need in order to get the key to Martha’s adolescence, but something has gone wrong. Only the delightful Isabelle can summon the key from the astral plane, but she’s upset and needs help. Very well, I’ll give you a hint: bring back a few City artifacts. Add a pinch of magic and Isabelle’s sorcery.
Splendid! We’ve got the key to Martha’s adolescence! It’s made of gold, decorated with sapphires, and adorned with doves and an aquamarine goblet. It looks incredibly valuable. I can’t even imagine what it’s worth! But the most important thing is that this is the second beacon that will help Martha’s soul find the way back to her abandoned body.
-
First Experiments
Valerie
Now we just have to find the last item that Martha kept from her school years. The profile says that she was into hypnotism. Try to find something from that field. What could it be? Perhaps a ball on a string?
Wow! What is that? Martha left a note here: "My first invention is the Hypnotic Beacon. It can be used to perform self-hypnosis. All you have to do is concentrate, prepare yourself mentally, look into the eye-shaped opening and voila!" This is way better than a spinning ball on a string.
-
The Finer Points of Spiritism
Detective
This isn’t the time to get down in the dumps. I’m certain that Martha was not expelled from the school. We need to get her back as soon as possible. In order to do that we need to force the key to her adolescence to materialise using items from her school years. The profile says that Martha was into spiritism. I think we should find something connected to summoning spirits.
What a fascinating figurine! The person who made it clearly knows a thing or two about spiritism - they depict the separation of the soul from the body so elegantly! There’s an inscription on the bottom: "New Orleans, 1915". That’s when Martha was a student at the school.
-
A Surprising Hand
Juliette
Mon ami, to get the Key to Adolescence that will help us bring Martha’s soul back, we need to find something connected to her time as a student at the School for Young Witches. Our Martha is an expert at reading tarot cards, and she learned this skill at school. Let’s try to find her old cards.
Oh, you found some Lenormand cards! They’re so old, and burnt to boot... that’s what happens when Martha has a spontaneous magical discharge. I saw something like this happen once before. She threw that deck away, but she kept this one as a memento. This must be her first deck of tarot cards.\n Look, the top card is the Sun! I hope that means we can save Martha!
-
Friendly Embrace
Valerie
I know what we need to look for from Martha’s time at the School for Young Witches! She probably had friends there. I had so many friends in college! Martha probably kept something related to her friends - maybe a yearbook or photos, or... well, you get it, right? Anyway, find it, and we’ll get closer to saving her.
What is that? A snake? It looks expensive. But why is it shaped like a snake? Hey, this is a copy of that python Martha never parts with. We were looking for her friends... could this python really be a school chum of hers? I don’t get it at all.
-
School Symbol
Detective
We need to help Isabelle materialise the key to our medium’s adolescence. One of the ghosts Martha summoned was her teacher from the School for Young Witches. That’s obviously where Martha spent her teenage years. That means we need to learn as much about this school as we can and collect items that belonged to Martha when she went there.\n Every school starts with an insignia. Try to find the insignia of Martha’s magic school.
Okay, show it to me. This could be the school’s insignia - doves drinking water out of a goblet. Maybe it represents the students drinking deep of the waters of knowledge... or something. At least no one is chewing the granite of science on it... by the way, have you noticed the text around the edge? It says "New Orleans School for Young Witches."
-
Happy Days
Isabelle
We now have all five items that belonged to Martha when she was little. They’ve revealed a mystery from her childhood to us. I’ll use them to force the key to materialise, and the key will serve as a beacon to Martha’s lost soul. In order to find the traces of the key on the astral plane, I’m going to need a few City artifacts. Please bring them to me.
Great job! Look - a key has appeared on the table. Wow, it’s so beautiful! It’s made of brass and has old-fashioned swirls and a pink bow on the handle. It really does look like the key to a happy child’s playroom. This is the first of the keys that will show our medium’s lost soul the way home.
-
Porcelain Hugs
Juliette
Martha never said much about her sister, but I think she loved her very much. She probably kept some kind of souvenir as a symbol of their closeness. Mon ami, search the Room of Fate for something connected to Martha’s sister. This will be the last item from Martha’s childhood that we need in order to save her. Hurry! The medium’s pulse is growing weaker by the hour.
What adorable cups! Look, mon ami, it’s like they’re hugging! Martha and her sister must have used their gift to meld the cups together. Thank you! Now we have all the items we need from Martha’s childhood to summon the first key that will help us get our medium back.
-
A Mental Blow
Isabelle
Items connected to Martha’s childhood will help us get her back. I think I know what to look for next. The presence of powerful mediums usually means that any nearby electronic devices frequently overheat and break. Could you find a damaged electrical coil or something?
Good job! I never could’ve done it without you! Just look at this isolator! It looks like it’s been hit by lightning. Obviously someone - either Martha or her sister Erin - was unable to cope with the intensity of her mental field. This is just what I had in mind.
-
Astral Electricity
Cardsharp
My dear friend, the newspaper article found in the Room of Fate describes a weathervane that was on the roof of Martha’s house. That’s just what we need - an item from her childhood. I think I’ve seen it somewhere in the Room of Fate. I remember wondering why Martha would need a weathervane? Well, apparently it was a memento. Find it.
Wonderful! This weathervane must have looked so beautiful when Martha’s gift made it glow with St. Elmo’s Fire... did you know that the flames appear on the sharp points of tall items thanks to an electrical charge in the air around them? Now we have one more item from Martha’s childhood.
-
Privilege of a Little Medium
Valerie
We need to summon the keys from Martha’s past and get her back right away! What other items from Martha’s childhood could be in the Room of Fate? Do you remember the doctor’s ghost Martha summoned?\n He threatened to put leeches on me. If he treated Martha when she was little, she might still have a few bottles of medicine, right? Look for some kind of bottle of medicine.
A bottle of cod liver oil! But why is the top fused shut? Hmm... Martha probably didn’t want to drink this disgusting oil and used her gift to fuse the top shut. I guess being a medium has its perks - I actually had to drink this nasty stuff!
-
Lucky Toy
Detective
It all makes sense now: Martha was searching the astral plane for items connected to key events from her past. If we complete the ritual and make those items materialize, they’ll show Martha’s soul the way back to her dying body. The first key is connected to Martha’s childhood. Find an old-fashioned toy.
A top? Fantastic work, buddy. I’ll give it a spin... Hey, lucky me! I got a six right away. What if I try it again? Another six... How funny. Little Martha must have enhanced this toy with a little magic so it always lands on the winning number.

A Biased Interrogation

The Missing Girl
Alex
I’m certain that the ghosts surrounding Martha know what happened to her. Now we just need to force the last one to materialise.\n I heard Martha pleading in a Texas drawl for someone to find her kidnapped daughter. That woman probably had a picture of the girl. Find the portrait of the missing girl. It will help us summon her mother’s ghost.
A cameo with a girl’s portrait? That’s just what we need. Look, the ghost of the inconsolable mother has appeared in the room. Though I’m not surprised that she doesn’t want to speak to us.\n Now all the ghosts are here, let’s hurry up and tell Isabelle. If anyone can get them to talk, it’s her. Martha is very weak. I don’t want her to die or end up trapped between worlds. I have no idea what this is...
-
The Ghostly Sorceress
Cardsharp
What an amazing little item! This is a magical monocle. Behind the lens is a real eye that is watching us. Look who’s appearing thanks to this artifact: a ghostly sorceress! Mademoiselle, would you be so kind as to... Hey, where are you going? What a shame...\n Hopefully we’ll be able to communicate with them once they’re all together.
-
The Doctor’s Appearance
Valerie
Nicely done! That’s a lovely glass bottle. Hey, this is Laudanum, an opium based drug! I’ve read about it. It’s a controlled substance now, but they used to use it to treat everything under the sun. Look, in the armchair - it’s the doctor himself in the flesh! Well, ghostly flesh... Um, hello there, sir! I’m afraid he isn’t responding.\n Let’s see what happens when we’ve got all five ghosts together.
-
The Defender of Order
Huntress
You did well, mein Freund. This is an old Sheriff’s Badge. Massachusetts... Martha’s home state.\n Oh mein Gott! And here’s the sheriff himself. Or rather his ghost. Well... Greetings, Herr Sherriff! Hmm, it seems he doesn’t wish to speak to me.
-
Manifestation Magic
Detective
How can we make the ghosts summoned by Martha answer our questions? Martha said that the items from their previous lives can materialize them. Little boy’s voice complained through Martha’s lips about losing his shuttlecock high in a tree. Find it!
Great! When we found the Shuttlecock, the little boy’s ghost appeared in a dark corner. My guess was correct - items from the past will allow us to make the ghosts who witnessed the events to materialize in the Room of Fate. We’re on the right track!
-
In Thrall to Ghosts
Detective
Restless spirits have made themselves at home in the Room of Fate, moving objects and causing reflections to flicker in the mirrors. Martha sits there in a trance, mumbling incoherent gibberish in various voices and not reacting to anything. What are we supposed to do about all of this? Darn it, I don’t know the first thing about any of this magical nonsense! Okay, buddy, take a look in the investigation book while I think about how to save our medium.
-
Magic Stabiliser
Isabelle
If the Collector was right and it’s truly the Laboratory of Time in front of us, the place is full of dangerous time anomalies. I’ve prepared a special potion to keep us safe from them. I don’t recommend going any further without a sip of the potion. Drink and let’s go!
Just look at all these devices! Glowing retorts, astrolabes, hourglasses with sand going upward... I brought a dried rose near them, and the bud came to life right in my hands. Perhaps the owner of this laboratory discovered a way to rule over time?
-
Dust of the Centuries
Detective
We’re one step away from entering the location. What will we find there? New mysteries of the City are waiting to be uncovered. Go on, enter!
The location is now open! Do you feel the pull of new adventures? The magic of the City is calling out to us!
-
Moment of Truth
Isabelle
Yes, we did it! Look into the Monocle. Can you see it? It’s the Black Castle, but it doesn’t look as gloomy as it does nowadays. A young woman is standing on the viewing platform with her hair streaming in the summer wind; she is laughing as a magical circle of golden gears and clock wheels spin above her head... Yes, this must be the joyful image that the Master saw!
-
Secret of Time
Mayor
The secret of the Laboratory of Time has been revealed. But whose life did the Master, who had the power of time, extend by turning other people into mummies? Where is he now? Could the mysterious door in the Laboratory of Time hide these secrets?
-
Poor Imitation
Martha
The City revealed the Laboratory of Time to us for a reason. It wanted us to learn about the Master, that this man was not only a scientist who travelled through time and space, but also a murderer.\n I feel... the City wants people to know about and remember these events. The City and the laboratory are ready to give us something that will not let us forget about what happened. Collect a few City artifacts, they’ll help make the memories of these walls more tangible.
-
Sinister Lighting
Huntress
Mein freund, I was just thinking... this Master isn’t very different from the monsters I’ve gotten used to destroying. He is fortunate that he is unknown in the City, otherwise I would insist on his very close acquaintance with my daggers. Find the Master’s final item as soon as possible, and let’s close this case.
Gosh, some kind of apparatus again! No, I got enough of an electrical shock from the Time Catcher. I won’t touch this thing as well. Now I’ll throw a knife into it, and... How monstrous you are in the Corona Discharge’s spotlight! The bones of your hands, skull, eye sockets - for a moment you looked like a demon!
-
Inevitable Ending
Martha
How awful! I don’t understand why I didn’t feel the ominous atmosphere of this place. Is it because of the anomalies located here? In any case, I need to perform a purification ritual. Let’s finish the investigation as soon as possible. Find something that indicates the direction of the Master’s future work.
Oh, you found the Ghost Spinning Top. It disappears with a quick spin, and what’s more, it can spin for a very long time, but not forever. Does this mean the Master achieved effects that were long, but not everlasting?
-
Frozen Process
Isabelle
My God, what horrible things the Master did, and still I considered him a professional equal! Let’s finish the investigation as quickly as possible and leave this place. I want to forget everything that happened here. Find an item that points out what else was done by this... this... No, I can’t even call him a scientist.
A crystal heart? It’s so cold! When I took it in my hands I was immediately reminded of cryostasis, which I read about in scientific publications. Most likely, the Master put his "test subjects" into anabiosis, like during a space flight. He had good reason to be so enthusiastic about the "deception of time" in his notes!
-
Energy Donor
Valerie
Oh, if you need any liquids, I saw a fountain somewhere here. It’s just a small indoor fountain, but perhaps it will help you learn about the Master’s true intentions?
Yes, yes, yes! This is the fountain I was talking about. It’s great that you found it... Look, its streams flow by emptying a container placed at a higher level. The container then becomes dry and brittle. Hey... Just like a mummy!
-
Sucking out the Juices
Detective
Wow, you found Connected Timers. It looks like two separate connecting water clocks simply placed at the same level. It would seem that the level of fluid in them should be the same, but, going against gravity, one water clock fills, emptying the other. What could this mean?
-
Event Settings
Valerie
Isabelle and Martha are arguing about the Master. The Detective and Juliette are checking around the laboratory. Mr. Cardsharp is examining the planetary model, where there is a yellow diamond instead of the sun, and I’m awfully interested in what hidden artifacts the Master of the laboratory will reveal! We saw machines for travelling to the past and the future; even a magical compass of times! What will we see now?\n Please bring City artifacts, they’ll speed up the process!
Thank you! Thank you, thank you! You brought the City artifacts and now we’ll learn what the laboratory is hiding! Look, I’m doing the same thing as Martha. I’m putting the things you collected on the table. The artifacts, everything shines beautifully, and... Golden Tuning Horns! They’re needed to tune the organ, but the Master most likely adjusted his time transport machines with them! Oh, I want to know how! And look, there’s another letter from the Master!
-
Stretching Moments
Alex
Unbelievable! It’s clear from the Master’s note that he found a way to control time! Plus, a lot of manipulations took place using musical instruments. I, as a musician, can tell you what we need to understand how he did it. A metronome! Find one quickly.
Splendid! You found the metronome, congratulations! Normally it measures short intervals of time with even strokes until it’s stopped, but modified by the Master, its frequency changes by itself. Now we can say with certainty that the Master’s devices are self-adjusting.
-
Minimising Risks
Martha
I had a vision that the Master used a round object similar to my crystal ball in his research. Find this item, and we’ll be one step closer to figuring out where the Master directed his efforts after he visited the future.
Oh, you’ve found the dodecahedron! Yes, that’s exactly what I saw when meditating. The dodecahedron came to us from Ancient Rome. Archaeologists have never figured out why the Romans needed it, but Isabelle suggests that the Master improved it and used it to compensate for things happenings at the moment of travel.
-
Directing Events
Huntress
Mein freund, thanks to you we learned that the Master was able to direct time so that in his travels he departed to a desired day and time. But if you ask me, something tangible or physical can be directed through time too. Find an item related to the concentration of time, as time itself is intangible.
You did great, congratulations! A concentration of time looks like a dreamcatcher made of metal chain links, and a blue light burning in the centre... Wow! It gave me an electrical shock!
-
Getting There Accurately
Isabelle
I’m so sad that I don’t know the Master! I think we would have many things in common to talk about. For instance, I’m extremely interested in how he calculated the exact time he needed to travel through. Let’s check, did he use the device or go by chance?
I don’t know what the Master called it, but I would call it a Moment Gyroscope. See, there are numbers on the rim for setting the time, which you need to adjust down to the second. Thanks to your find, we’ve learned that the Master not only obeyed the stream of time, but that it also guided him! What next?
-
Recording Anomalies
Juliette
Mon ami, allow me to speak.\n The Master studied time, travelled through it and was about to conduct an experiment to slow down time here in the City. He even mentioned that this was only the beginning! If we collect the items that he used in his experiments, then we’ll understand what his end goal was - and what his scientific research led to.\n Find something connected to the Master’s experiments. The City will help you.
The first find! Bravo, mon ami! It looks like a compass, only it’s demagnetised. The needle is spinning like crazy! Oh, and if you step further away from the Master’s devices, the needle comes to a stop and points red. This device must identify time anomalies!
-
Portal into the Future
Martha
The items you’ve collected, that the Master brought back from the future to the City of Shadows, have an amazing aura. It’s not a bright halo surrounding one object, but one that flows from one thing to another, as if they all have the same aura. Maybe it’s because none of these items belong in our time period, but, most likely, it’s that the laboratory is ready to reveal a powerful artifact. We need City magic to materialise it.\n Bring me some artifacts.
